Bluebell Island Park

At the east end of the business block, rest on a bench and listen to the river as it flows over the rapids. Begin your scenic hike of the Old Gilead Side Cut towpath here by crossing the footbridge over the canal spillway. Turn left for an easy half-mile hike to the dam at Mary Jane Thurston State Park.

Mary Jane Thurston State Park

At the west end of the Village on State Route 65 is Mary Jane Thurston State Park and Marina. Featuring a working canal gate, overlook of the state dam, fishing site below the dam, shelter house, picnic facilities, and a sledding hill, Mary Jane is a great place for a quiet walk or fun with family and friends! The marina includes a public boat launch.

Otsego Park

Recently remodeled, this rustic stone shelter house, located about 4 miles east of Grand Rapids on State Route 65, boasts a glassed-in room from which to observe wildlife and the Maumee River.  Hiking trails, canoeing, picnic facilities, and fishing access are available

The eight mile Towpath Trail along the river is a quiet, scenic trail connecting Providence, Bend View and Farnsworth Metroparks.


By Kayak

Enjoy the day paddling a kayak on the beautiful Maumee river. River Lures, located just a few short blocks from The Grand Kerr House, provides both single person kayaks, and tandem (two) person kayaks for rent. They rent "sit-on-tops" kayaks that are the safest boats they can put you on. They DO NOT fill up with water even if you get tipped over.

Fishing

The Maumee river provides some of the best fishing in Northwest Ohio. It has many islands, stream inlets, and tributaries that provide excellent spawning ground for sport fish such as walleye, smallmouth, largemouth, crappie, bluegill and sunfish as well as carp, channel cat, bullhead and shovelhead that can weigh as much as 50 pounds.
